    Moses Shauck attended Senior Preparatory classes at Otterbein University in 1860, and the following year he also took classes to fulfill a scientific course of study.  At the age of twenty-seven, he volunteered for service in the Civil War.  He mustered into Company I of the 136 Ohio Volunteer Infantry on May 13, 1864 and served as their Lieutenant Captain.  While he was enlisted, his infantry was placed on garrison duty at forts Ellsworth and Williams, as well as guarding the northern defenses of Washington D.C.  The infantry also repulsed General Early’s attack on Washington D.C. on July 11 and 12 of 1864.  Shauck mustered out of military service in August 31, 1864.
