Citing Your Sources

 What is plagiarism?

Passing off someone else's work or ideas as your own. In short, copying without giving credit. Mount Mary University's undergraduate and graduate handbooks both require the recognition of other people's ideas. In most courses, using others' works with artificial intelligence (AI) tools is also prohibited.

So, you should be using others' ideas and mixing them with your own to create a brand new work: your own.

Why do I have to cite?
  • To lead the reader back to the original source
  • It is imperative to give credit to original ideas
  • It reflects your thorough research work exploring sources
  • This further distinguishes your own ideas
How do I know when to cite?
  • Using exact quotations of two or more words
  • Paraphrasing or summarizing someone’s facts or ideas
  • Common, though potentially unfamiliar ideas
  • Anything that adds relevant information to your work
  • In doubt? CITE!
