This libguide will provide Otterbein students with a centralized repository of resources they have available to them, both on campus and off.

Academic Support Center & Disability Services

"The mission of the Academic Support Center is to help students develop and strengthen the skills necessary to attain their academic goals. Through collaboration with students, faculty, and staff the ASC supports students in becoming independent, lifelong learners in an accessible, student-centered environment. We facilitate the development of learning strategies and skills in partnership with peers and professionals through tutoring, academic coaching, academic courses, and other learner-focused services."  (Academic Support Center website)

To register with Disability Services, fill out the Disability Services Registration Form.  Please note that in order to receive services, you must have a qualified healthcare professional fill out the required fields on the form.

Disability Services has the same contact information as the Academic Support Center.  This information is listed in the top right box.  If you are uncertain whether or not you qualify for services, please contact the staff with questions.

Disability Services

Disability Services is part of the Academic Support Center, and it works to ensure compliance with the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act, and the ADA amendments act of 2008 by maintaining legal requirements that provide equal access to resources, opportunities, and education for students with disabilities.

Disability Services has their own website within the Academic Support Center's website.

Disabilities that Disability Services accommodate include, but are not limited to:

  • ADHD
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Blind/low vision
  • Chronic Health Conditions (e.g., cancer, diabetes, migraines)
  • D/deaf or Hard of Hearing
  • Learning Disabilities (e.g., dyscalculia, dyslexia)
  • Mental Health Conditions (e.g., anxiety, depression, PTSD)
  • Physical Disabilities (e.g., amputee, paraplegia)
  • Temporary Injuries (e.g., broken limb, concussion, surgery recovery)

Accommodations that Disability Services provide include, but are not limited to:

  • Testing accommodations
  • Note-taking support
  • Accessible materials
  • ASL interpreting
  • Assistive Technology
  • Advocacy

Math Lab

The Academic Support Center runs a Math Lab and offers free walk-in assistance by trained peer tutors and professional staff on the second floor of the library.

For more information about specific classes the Math Lab offers tutoring, study skills, and strategies for, check out the Math Lab's website.  Their schedule and open hours are available there, as well as information on how to become a peer tutor.

Writing Lab

The Academic Support Center also runs a Writing Center on the second floor of the library, where students can receive help with writing assignments, as well as editorial assistance.

Currently the Writing Center is open by appointment only.  Information about setting up an appointment is available on the Writing Center website.

The Writing Center website also lists resources available to students, information on services they provide, as well as information on applying to be a peer tutor.

Tutoring

The Academic Support Center offers content tutoring in all areas except for Music (Music tutoring is available through the Music Department).

Workshop Series

The Academic Support Center offers a series of free workshops to students that cover topics such as time management, test anxiety, learning styles, test-taking tips, and finals prep.

To check when these workshops are offered each fall and spring, and to register for them, check the Academic Support Center website.

Academic Coaching

The Academic Support Center also provides Academic Coaching services to students.  Please contact ASC if you are struggling with any of the following:

  • Organization and time management.
  • Avoiding procrastination.
  • Pre-planning of projects and creating study schedules.
  • Seeking help from professors.
  • Signing up for tutoring and utilization of campus resources.
  • Improving and using effective study skills an strategies.
  • Balancing study time and social time.
  • Handing in assignments and projects on time.
  • Meeting with an advisor to pick appropriate classes.
  • Getting enough sleep and proper nutrition.
  • Being accountable and making good choices.

The Academic Support Center also offers the following academic courses, ranging from 1-3 credit hours each:

  • MATH 0900 – Prerequisite to College Mathematics
  • MATH 0960 – Support Topics for Precalculus
  • MATH 1250 –  Precalculus
  • INST 1502 – Situated Selves – Writing Intensive
  • EDUC 0901 – Standardized Test Prep: Reading
  • EDUC 0902 – Writing for Education Students
  • EDUC 0903 – Standardized Test Prep: Math
