Social Media for Teaching & Learning

LitReview Intro

This page features research articles collected through a general review of recent scholarly literature on the use of social media for teaching and learning in higher education. Entries were organized into four overarching categories, for your convenience:

  • Across the Disciplines: Articles that take a general approach to discussing the use of social media for teaching and learning.
  • Communication, Collaboration, Engagement & Community: Studies that focus on the potential of social media to engage students, mediate group work, and generate communities of students and faculty.
  • Educational Design & Integration: These resources discuss the integration of social media into different learning activities as well as whole courses or programs.
  • Writing & Assessment: Research that focuses on academic writing and social media or on assessing student work when social media is involved.
  • Cultural Studies & Language Learning; Education & Healthcare: During this literature review, these four disciplines emerged as pioneers on the use of social media for teaching and learning; enough to merit their own sections. Despite the disciplinary focus, these studies should still be helpful to educators in other areas.
