Diversity Reading Lists

This LibGuide provides information on our themed reading lists. Each kit contains a non-fiction book, novel, a young adult novel, and a middle grade novel or juvenile picture book.

What are the Diversity Reading Lists?

Have you ever been part of a book club? Are you interested in starting your own? Do you want to explore different topics in a new way? We've compiled lists of titles organized around specific themes for you to explore and share with others interested in similar topics:

  • Black Culture
  • Coming Together
  • Grief & Loss
  • Immigration Stories
  • Ohio Road Trip
  • Strong Female Characters

Many of the books feature diverse characters and authors. You'll find a selection of genres - from picture books to poetry, and memoir to novels to non-fiction. Books featured on these lists were written by Ohio authors or won awards administered in Ohio.

Interested in using the lists to facilitate a group discussion? Here are some tips:

1. Pick a theme that interests you and your group.

2. Select the book or books you will discuss. Depending on the ages, interests, and backgrounds of your group members, you may select one book or multiple books.

3. If you need copies of a particular book, search the library catalog or check with the library staff about ordering copies through OhioLINK! (Westerville Public Library may also be a great place to snag multiple copies of the same title).

4. Pick a comfortable spot to host your book discussion. You can host it virtually over Teams or in person in one of the library's many comfortable areas.

5. Every list has a corresponding set of discussion questions that you can download. Select questions from the options related to the book or books you chose.

6. Use the discussion questions as conversation starters. If you don't like these questions, you may want to think of your own or search the Internet for more. You can also ask a librarian for ideas on finding discussion materials!
