Here are some resources to help you select books, as well as non-traditional materials for a teen collection. These include graphic novels, audiobooks, and books for reluctant readers. It would do your teens a disservice not to provide them with a breadth of options for all reading preferences. It would also do them a disservice if censorship were to stand between them and a robust collection. When developing a collection, it is also important to be aware of censorship and banned or challenged books.
Awards lists can help us shape collections, but we shouldn't rely solely on them to inform our decisions, especially because award winners are not always the most popular among teens. More often than not, we should try to listen to teen voices to learn what they would like to read.
