Young Adult Literature

This guide is intended to help teachers and librarians select reading materials for teens.

Teen Development

Why is learning about the teen brain so important? If we better understand a teen's inner workings, the better we can empathize with what they're going through during this stage of development. WIth more empathy, we are are better able to select materials they will relate to and create services from which they will benefit. Recall your own teenage years and the challenges you faced. Chances are today's teens are grappling with similar issues.

We must always remember that the hallmark of the teen brain is that it is still developing! They are not fully equipped with the decision making abilities of an adult. For example, impulse control may be more difficult for them. However, we must continue to approach working with teens keeping in mind that they still possess formed selves with unique and valuable perspectives.
