Teacher Education Decision Points

Teacher Education Candidates: Critical Decision Points and Assessment Benchmarks

To determine the progress of education and teaching candidates in meeting departmental standards, five benchmarks or checkpoints are used across the programs. 
Note: The Otterbein Department of Education reserves the right to refuse registration and/or admission to any candidate who does not meet the criteria or who does not make satisfactory progress in the Teacher Education Program.

Decision Point 1:  Pre-Admission (Entry to EDUC 1600)

  • 2.5 overall GPA in courses that appear on the Otterbein transcript
  • ACT scores of 20 or above on both English and Math, OR
  • SAT scores of 500 or above on both Critical Writing (formerly Critical Reading) and Math, OR
  • Praxis I score of 172 or above on Writing and/or Math OR Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators (as of 9/1/14) with scores of 150 on Math and/or 162 on Writing.  Scores must be sent to Otterbein University, Education Department. Students who fail the same Praxis I OR Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators test three times are no longer eligible for program admission.

Otterbein University offers program to prepare teachers in several settings: Early Childhood (Pre-K through grade 3), Early Childhood Intervention Specialist (Pre-K through grade 3), Middle Childhood (grades 4-9), and Secondary (adolescent/young adult, grades 7-12).
