Equine Business Management Guide

The Animal Science Research and Extension program is a diverse program that conducts research on animal health, breeding, and nutrition with several animal species. Research is also conducted in food science and meat science areas to ultimately provide consumers safe, high quality food products. The Extension program uses the research to educate the public with practical education programs to improve current practices.

Personnel with programmatic Extension responsibilities in the Department of Animal Sciences are responsible for fulfilling the missions of OSU Extension and the department, that is, to help people improve their lives through an educational process using scientific knowledge focused on identified issues and needs pertaining to animals and their commercial production. Two of the four program areas in OSU Extension (Agriculture & Natural Resources and Youth Development) are the focal attention of these personnel. The primary audiences are citizens of Ohio and industries and agencies that either provide goods and services for commercial animal production or are engaged in activities relating to the processing and distribution of animal products.

The team of Dr. Kimberly Cole and Ms. Masa Williams with the assistance of county educators and volunteers provides a variety of activities that engage about 10,000 youth from throughout the state of Ohio in a variety of horse projects. These include projects that promote the development of life skills, including knowledge of horsemanship, communications, and responsible horse care and management. Although programs may change from year to year, they often include various Ohio 4-H events throughout the year and at the Ohio State Fair, Ohio Quarter Horse Association events at Quarter Horse Congress, programs for the Regional Equine Information Network System (REINS), and the Ohio State Fair Junior Horse Show.

The Department of Animal Science’s Extension and Outreach program benefits New York’s animal industries through public education on the biology and management of domestic animals. Many of our faculty and academic staff work through Cornell Cooperative Extension to provide information and guidance to the many farms and agricultural entities in the State. The department has active adult and youth extension programs in the areas of dairy, beef, sheep, goats, and swine. In addition, the Animal Science Department supports a very active 4-H program that engages and empowers youth who are interested in animal-related projects, biology, and production systems.

We teach, learn, lead and serve, connecting people with the University of Wisconsin, and engaging with them in transforming lives and communities.

The Equine Adult Extension Program provides scientific based information on production management and health as well as equine related legislative issues to the Michigan Horse Industry through county and state wide programs and publications. Equine Adult Extension Programs are conducted by campus faculty and county staff through out the state emphasizing sustainable management practices that promotes horse welfare.

Penn State Extension delivers animal education and programs in four primary areas: dairy, equine, poultry, and livestock (including sheep, swine, beef cattle, and goats).

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach helps carry Iowa State's land-grant mission beyond campus, to be the university that best serves its state.

There are four sections within Animal Science that are part of the Cooperative Extension Service. They are Animal Husbandry, Dairy Extension, Swine Husbandry, and Horse Husbandry. Each section operates within their area of expertise, but often there are overlapping interests.

Extension is the third arm of the land grant system provided by the Smith-Lever Act in 1914. This Act established the Cooperative Extension Service and specified that the service would be associated with a land grant college. The Act also stipulated that Federal funds be matched with local funds. Florida Cooperative Extension is a partnership between UF/IFAS, United States Department of Agriculture, and county governments in Florida to provide scientific knowledge and expertise to the public through non-resident educational programs.

Extension’s major role in the Division of Animal Sciences is to extend its research and knowledge base to meet the needs of all Missouri citizens.

The Division of Animal Sciences is home to specialists with joint appointments in Extension, Research and Teaching. We communicate the Division of Animal Sciences’ innovative bench-to-barnyard research to farms and ranches across the state of Missouri. By encouraging technology adoption, responding to critical issues, and supporting livestock producers, the Division of Animal Sciences Extension programs ensure sustainable and profitable livestock production in the state of Missouri.
