        George Andrus was just eighteen years old when he enlisted into the 5th Independent Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Battalion.  The 5th battalion was formed here in Columbus, Ohio on July 9, 1863.  The unit served for six months until they mustered out during February of 1864.  The unit was ordered to Cincinnati to carry out scouting missions and to deter guerilla raids.  Throughout their service the battalion lost three men, one in battle and two others to disease.
