Ferris was born in 1845. He enlisted with the Ohio Volunteer Unit 176 Company E at the age of 19. Ferris mustered in to Camp Chase in June of 1864, and mustered out on September 21st 1864.
During the war, he served provost-guard duty in Nashville Tennesee, and participated in the Battle of Nashville which occured December 15-16, 1864.
Ferris was discharged in June of 1865.
