Augustus Starr | 5th Battalion Ohio Voluntary Cavalry

Augustus Starr | 5th Battalion Ohio Voluntary Cavalry
by Todd Sutherland

Augustus Starr was a corporal in the 5th independent Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Battalion, organized in Columbus, Ohio on July 9, 1863.  He was twenty-four years of age at the time of his enlistment, served six months until his regiment was mustered out in Cincinnati, Ohio on February 15, 1864.  Although some sources say it stayed a little longer and actually mustered out in Columbus, Ohio. Their purpose in the war was to serve for only six months to help stop the advancement of Morgan's troops and the confederacy into Northern Kentucky and parts of Ohio.  This Regiment never saw any real combat. But did lose one enlisted man who was killed in stopping raids in that area and two other enlisted men who died of natural causes. Augustus Starr died sometime before 1908 before the Civil War Veterans' Registry book was compiled. There is no record of him in the Otterbein Course Catalog or any other student roster only on the monument outside of Towers Hall.
