John A. Bowman was born in Oberlin, Ohio in 1843. Oberlin is located in Lorain County and is part of the Cleveland-Lorain-Elyria, Ohio metro area. Bowman was 18 years old when he entered the war on October 7, 1861. Bowman was mustered in as a musician and served in the Union army for three years. Bowman was a member of the 76th Ohio Voluntary Infantry, Company “I”. His company mustered in on October 3, 1861 in Newark, Ohio and out on July 15, 1865 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Captain of the 76th O.V.I. was Edward Briggs. During the course of the war, 9 officers and 82 enlisted men were killed and mortally wounded and 5 officers and 265 enlisted men died by disease. On October 13, 1864, a 21-year-old Bowman was mustered out on an expiration of term of service.
