Henry Hewett | 10th Ohio Voluntary Cavalry |
by Heather Towers |
Henry Hewett was a member of the Tenth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry Company D. He mustered in to the Cavalry on November fourteenth 1863; he was twenty-one years old at the time. Henry Hewett was just one of many men associated with Otterbein College that joined the war effort. Little is known about Henry Hewett’s life before or after the Civil War, however his life during the war years is documented.
Henry Hewett served in the Union Cavalry for three years. His regiment took part in many famous Civil War battles. The Tenth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry participated in the battle of Chickamauga in September 1863, the capture of North Carolina’s Governor, much of Kilpatrick’s movements, and Sherman’s march to the sea. This unit also participated in many less famous battles such as Resaca and Waynesboro. This unit faced problems, as did all units, when there horses died due to starvation in the winter of 1863. The Tenth Ohio Volunteer Cavalry actively served until the close of the war in 1865. The unit lost a total of two hundred and one men, who were killed by a combination of diseases, wounds, and battles.
Henry Hewett survived the Civil War, which took over 620,000 lives, however little is documented about his days after the Civil War. According to the Soldiers Memorial pamphlet located in the Otterbein Room, Hewett was already deceased at the time the Civil War monument was created in 1908.
